In some edentulous patients with severe alveolar ridge resorption and unstable mandibular position, it is difficult to obtain
satisfactory result through conventional complete denture treatment. The use of treatment denture with flat occlusal table deprograms the neuromuscular system, thus it can find physiological position of mandible and help to stabilize the mandibular movements. Functional impression needs to be considered in cases with severe alveolar bone resorption, especially when retention and stability cannot be achieved. In particular, ¡®dynamic impression¡¯have been reported to prevent the denture from dropping by muscle may occur because of excessive extension of border and to utilize the tissue fixation effect of the dentures. In this case report, the patient had unstable mandibular position due to lack of posterior occlusal support. The treatment of osteomyelitis led to severe alveolar bone resorption. By using interim treatment denture with flat occlusal table and dynamic impression, retention and stability of denture as well as stable mandibular position.
